Anyone who's been to the Efteling (Holland's biggest themepark) has seen it: Kids feeding Holle Bolle Gijs with trash.
It keeps the park clean in a way which is fun. Oh, and it's only been here since about 60 years.

Why is this a perfect example of Behavioral Design?

Business challenge = "we want a clean entertainment park, without paying employees"
Motivation for user = high (it's fun, you get feedback from Gijs, saying "dank je wel!")
Ability = easy (Gijs even sucks in air, making it easy to throw in trash)
Trigger = clear (Gijs saying: "papier hier!")

What do crack dealers & Spotify have in common?

→ You will be AMAZED and SHOCKED!

How does IKEA design for a fun shopping experience?

→ By making you eat hot dogs and ice cream, of course!

IKEA uses ice cream & hot dogs to make you forget the last horrible hour in their store. In that last hour, customers were:

endlessly looking for that bookcase in the warehouse
waiting in line
paying more than expected
hangry as hell

The ice cream and hot dog after the check-out, make you forget all the bad stuff when driving home. The entire experience (in this case shopping) is remembered as more pleasant when you finish with something pleasurable.
It's called the Peak-End rule.
